The Mourning Dove is a slim bird with a small head and long, tapered tail. Brown or brownish gray above, paler below. White tips on tail. It's a liitle smaller than a Robin but larger than a Sparrow. It's voice: a mournful "whoo-oo, hoo, hoo, hoo" and it can even sound like it's laughing. The wings make a special sound when they fly, too.
The Mourning Dove is one of the most common birds in the United States. It feeds mostly on seeds and may eat some insects. It especially likes the 'Dove Weed' (Turkey Mullein) at Kaweah Oaks Preserve, and can be seen feeding around the dove weed most of the time in late summer and fall. Look at the ground near this weed located on the dirt road and see all the dove foot prints.
